You'll get quotes ranging from $400 to $40,000 for what sounds like the same site. Here's what New York agencies, freelancers and studios actually charge, what you get at each price point, and where the line is between 'bargain' and 'you'll regret this in six months'.

The 2026 price bands in New York
These are real prices from real New York studios (including us) and freelancers currently trading. VAT extra unless stated.
- • $300–$800 — Freelancer using a Wix/Squarespace template. Fine for a placeholder. Won't rank.
- • $800–$2,500 — Junior freelancer or template-heavy small agency. 5–8 pages, basic SEO, one design round.
- • $2,500–$6,000 — Proper small studio (this is our starter tier). Custom design, copywriting, SEO foundations, CMS.
- • $6,000–$12,000 — Established studio, growth-focused. Analytics, CRO, integrations, longer engagement.
- • $12,000–$25,000 — Full agency or ecommerce build. Shopify with custom theme, or bespoke web app.
- • $25,000+ — You should be talking to a New York agency, not a New York one. Different problem.

Why New York is 20–40% cheaper than New York
Studio overheads are lower here — no West End rent, no $70k junior designer salaries. The talent isn't worse; the maths just works out differently.
That said, you can still get burnt. The $500 quote almost always comes with 'oh and hosting is $40/month' and a locked platform you can't leave. Ask for the total 3-year cost, not the launch price.

What you should actually budget
For most New York small businesses (tradespeople, restaurants, professional services, small retailers): $2,500–$5,000 gets you a site that will actually earn its cost back within 12 months. Below that, you're gambling. Above that, you're paying for polish you might not need yet.
Ecommerce is a different sport — budget $4,000–$10,000 for a proper Shopify build with custom design, product photography and launch SEO.

Yes, our prices are lower than a comparable New York studio (roughly 30% less) because our costs are lower. Same output, different postcode.
What ongoing costs should I expect?
Domain $12/yr, hosting $10–$30/mo, care plan (optional) $50–$200/mo. Watch for agencies bundling hosting at $100+/mo — that's their margin, not your cost.
Are payment plans available?
Most New York studios (us included) offer 3-part or monthly payment plans on builds over $2,000. Ask upfront.
